It is one of the most popular choices among job-seeking youth in India. But becoming a teacher in India is not so simple now. One needs to clarify some special examinations and possess some pre-defined degrees to become a teacher. At the school level, there are many categories of teachers – PRT, TGT, and PGT. PRT (Primary Teacher): –

PRT is also known by the name of Elementary Teacher. These are the teachers qualified to teach students from classes 1 to 5. For becoming PRT, one must at least possess D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education). This diploma is for two years and can be pursued by various universities and institutes. One of the main institutes in India providing this Diploma is NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling).

TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher): –

These are the teachers qualified to teach up to the 10th standard. For becoming TGT, B.Ed. is must. B.Ed. is also a two-year full bachelor’s degree level program comprising practical training. It is a full-time course, offered by various government, semi-government and private institutes. For pursuing this course, graduation in any one of the subjects that are are a must. Minimum marks in graduation are 50% to 55%.  There is no upper age limit for pursuing this course.

PGT (Post Graduate Teacher): –

Post Graduate Teachers are qualified to teach students up to class 12. The difference between a PGT and TGT is that to become a TGT one must possess only a graduate degree and then pursue B.Ed. To become a PGT, one must possess a post-graduate degree in some subject of their choice and then pursue B.Ed.

Once, a candidate has procured B.Ed. degree and fulfilled all the prerequisites of becoming a PGT, TGT, and PRT, he/she will be able to apply for a variety of eligibility examinations for the teachers such as –

  1. CTET (Conducted by CBSE)
  2. KVS (Conducted by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan)
  3. NVS (Conducted by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti)
  4. DSSSB (Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board)
